Zebra with gold stripes8/6/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Ren Larison, a biologist at the University of California, Los Angeles, who has received funding from the National Geographic Society, notes that the “blonde” male zebras at the private reserve in Mount Kenya behave “as stallions with harems”-the standard zebra grouping of a single male and several females. Pitamitz’s photographs “provide confirmation that animals with the condition can survive in the wild that they are seemingly accepted by ‘normal’ zebras,” says Barsh. ![]() He says the sighting indicates that the genetic variant responsible for partial albinism may be distributed more widely, in and around Kenya, than we were aware of before. Another, named Zoe, was born with the condition at a zoo in Hawaii and spent her life at a sanctuary until her death in 2017. A few dozen partially albino zebras live on a private reserve in Mount Kenya National Park. The animals are so rarely found that, despite some reported sightings in the wild, they’ve only been confirmed to exist in captivity. “Nothing is known about albinism in zebras,” says Barsh by email. As a result, stripes appear pale in color. Partial albinism means that the animal has significantly less melanin-a natural pigment found in skin-than typical zebras. (See pictures of zebras in National Geographic magazine.) The golden-colored zebra likely has partial albinism, a condition very rarely seen in zebras, confirm several scientists, including Greg Barsh, a geneticist at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology. But as he watched the animal wade into the water and start drinking, he noticed that the “dust” wasn’t washing off. “At first I thought it was a zebra that had rolled in the dust,” says Pitamitz. As dozens of the animals slowly meandered into the clearing, he spotted something unusual in the middle of the herd: A pop of white. Near a watering hole in a quiet valley in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park on February 17, photographer Sergio Pitamitz hoped to capture some images of migrating zebras. ![]()

Black hole photo8/6/2023 ![]() The image now published was obtained at a wavelength of 1.3 millimetres and clearly shows a ring-shaped structure with a dark central region - the shadow of the black hole. High-resolution radio observations in the millimeter wave range allow astronomers to penetrate to the edges of black holes, undisturbed from dense dust and gas clouds. This is caused by the extremely strong diffraction of the light - just before it irrevocably disappears into the black hole. The only way to see black holes is to reproduce their "shadow". Therefore they remain black - and it is impossible to perceive them directly. Their mass and thus their gravitational pull are so large that even light cannot escape them. Black holes are fascinating cosmic objects that comprise an incredible total mass within a tiny area of space. The regions around supermassive black holes are exposed to the most extreme conditions we know of in space. The heart of the supermassive galaxy M 87 has two special characteristics that make it a suitable candidate for the project: Thanks to its unusual size and its relative proximity to Earth, it is easily visible, making it a perfect object of study for astronomers, who, with the global telescope network, finally have an instrument to observe such an exotic object directly. © NASA, ESA and the Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA) ![]() With its location in Europe and its extraordinary sensitivity, this telescope played a decisive role in the success of EHT observation. ![]() IRAM, an institution co-financed by the Max Planck Society, actively participated in the campaign with its 30-meter telescope. "As early as the 1990s, the Max Planck Institute in Bonn and our institute with its two observatories demonstrated both technically and scientifically that we have a unique method with high-resolution radio observations to analyze the immediate surroundings of supermassive black holes. Zensus said it was remarkable that in this project astronomical observations and theoretical interpretations led faster than expected to the expected result.Īccording to IRAM Director Karl Schuster, the success is based on "decades of European expertise" in millimeter astronomy. "For the first time, the results give us a clear view of a supermassive black hole and mark an important milestone in our understanding of the fundamental processes that determine the formation and evolution of galaxies in the universe," says Anton Zensus, Director at the Max Planck Institute in Bonn and Chairman of the EHT Collaboration Council. The measurement data were calibrated and evaluated at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn using a supercomputer, the correlator. In 2017 alone, the telescopes recorded a total of about four petabytes of data - such a large amount that postal transport is actually faster and more efficient than sending the data via the Internet. The network of this so-called Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) included the 30-meter IRAM mirror in Spain and the APEX telescope in Chile, in which the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy is involved. An extreme angular resolution of less than 20 micro arc seconds can be achieved if our eyes had such a power, we could see the individual molecules in our hands. This synchronization takes place with the aid of high-precision atomic clocks accurate to the nanosecond. Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) is the name of this technique, in which the signals of the individual antennas are superimposed. In April 2017, the scientists linked eight telescopes around the globe for the first time, thus forming a virtual telescope with an aperture almost as large as the diameter of the Earth. Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy and the Institute for Radio Astronomy in the Millimetre Range (IRAM) are also involved in the observation. ![]() This worldwide network of eight ground-based radio telescopes focused on the galaxy Messier 87, about 55 million light years away. In this way, the Event Horizon Telescope has now succeeded for the first time in photographing a black hole. Because black holes are surrounded by shining gas discs and therefore stand out from the dark background, similar to a black cat on a white sofa. What sounds plausible is fortunately a little different in practice for astronomers. Black holes swallow all light and are therefore invisible. ![]()

Batch file rename files in folder8/6/2023 ![]() Batch File Renamer offers a Command Line prompt with CMD and Execute buttons at the bottom of the interface this option should appeal to system admins and the hard-core, old-school types out there. We clicked Start Renaming, and the program quickly did the deed, as we verified by opening the folder to see the changes for ourselves. Next we entered what we wanted to replace and what to replace it with, selected the File Attributes from a handy check box on the interface, and clicked Replace, which previewed the changes in the destination field. We selected LowerCase in the Generate Destination File Names entry field and clicked Generate. The scrolling tree view for browsing to the source destination is a bit awkward a standard file-browsing dialog would be an improvement. The user interface is a compact, efficient job with a single window displaying customizable fields: Dates, Source Filenames, Destination Filenames, Size, and so on. We noted that Batch File Renamer is portable, requiring no formal installation: just click the program file, and it runs. It's very small, totally portable, and free, too. It can sort file names by name, date, and time, and it previews all changes before making them. Then input "del " and press Enter.Batch File Renamer from Ezyware is, as its name suggests, a batch file renamer, a utility that can quickly and easily change the name, order, and attributes of files and folders, either singly or in large batches in this case, up to a million files at once. The basic command locates the specified folder, while the /s parameter will delete all files contained in the directory subfolders, and the /f parameter ignores any read-only settings.Īlternatively, head to the folder containing the files you want to delete, hit Shift Right Click, and select Open a command window here. To delete a single file, use the following command: del C:\enter\your\path\here /f /s If you point it at something critical, you could break your operating system. ![]() It removes entire directories, including file structures and everything in-between. You can add parameters to both commands to delete and remove specific types of files or to simply remove everything.įair warning, the rmdir command is powerful and potentially dangerous. The Command Prompt has two powerful file removal commands at its disposal: DEL and rmdir.ĭEL is fairly self-explanatory as the command to delete a file, while rmdir is the command to remove an entire directory. Batch Delete Files Using the Command Prompt When it comes to batch deleting files on Windows 10, you have a few options. This command works from the top of the file directory downwards, changing batch renaming matching files in each subfolder. ![]() One thing you can do with PowerShell is batch rename files throughout an entire directory, rather than a single folder. Dir | Rename-Item –NewName īatch Rename Filenames Throughout Entire Directory One option is to replace part of the filename with something else, which is handy for replacing files from a digital camera. PowerShell offers a few different options for batch renaming filenames. If your filename includes spaces, you'll need to use quotation marks around the filenames, like so: Rename-Item "file name with spaces.jpg" "new file name with spaces.jpg" If you want to rename a single file, use the following command: Rename-Item filename.jpg newfilename.jpg How about adding a suffix to a group of files? You can do that using the following command:įrom here, you can begin batch renaming filenames with PowerShell. Here, the question mark wildcard acts as any character, allowing the command to find any matching files while outputting the renamed files. For example, if you want to change the number of digits in your file names, you can use the following command: ren document?.txt document3?.txt If you want to rename multiple files, you can use the wildcard characters to make changes. The command to rename a single file is: ren filename.jpg newfilename.jpg ![]() Type dir and press Enter to see the list of files. Head to the folder containing the files you wish to rename, hit Shift Right Click, and select Open a command window here. The command allows for the wildcard characters "*" and "?" as well as changing file extensions, though it doesn't permit you to move files into different folders after renaming. You can use the ren command to rename multiple files simultaneously. The Windows Command Prompt offers a bit more flexibility for batch file renaming. ![]()
